Mental Illness and Higher Education

Everyone says that college comprises the best years of your life. But if you're living with a mental illness then they can also be some of the hardest years of your life. College presents unique challenges such as dorm life, classes, parties, and job hunting. Moreover, colleges handle mental illnesses in different ways and the laws are confusing. Am I allowed to get an accommodation? What about using student health services? What privacy laws apply?

Getting a label like “mentally ill” can feel exceptionally isolating–as can the disease itself. But there’s no need to feel alone. Studies waver on the exact numbers, but they consistently show that more and more college students are being diagnosed with moderate to severe mental illnesses. Psychiatric drugs are being taken by more students than ever. Moreover, suicide is the #2 leading cause of death among college students (behind homicide). Feel less lonely now?
