If your school receives federal funds, this law applies to you!
In summery you have the following rights:
1. To view your educational record. You have the right to read “Your File.” This doesn’t include a teacher’s personal notes or anything that law enforcement might compile about you.
2. To limit the exposure of your record. There are only two cases in which someone other than yourself may view your record. The first is a “school official” who has “legitimate educational interest.” The other is in the event of a “health and safety emergency.” Your record does follow you to other schools and, if you are under 21 and break the school’s drug or alcohol policy they CAN tell your parents.
