The Tough Truth

You WILL be discriminated against.

The mentally ill are the single most persecuted group in human history. Even in the United States today–a country founded on the ideals of freedom–there are two types of people who can be detained without due process. Terrorists and the mentally ill.

You WILL hear ridiculous arguments that make you want to vomit.

I’ve heard that the mentally ill shouldn’t date. I’ve even heard the opinion that they shouldn’t own dogs because it is “unfair to the animal to be stuck with someone unstable.”

Times are changing!

Science has proven that “mental” illness is actually physical.

Mental illness is more readily recognized and diagnosed.

All of these facts mean that more people are recognizing what we already know–that our illness doesn’t make us inherently violent or evil. Are some people violent? Yes. But so are some “sane” people. Ex. Hitler.

In addition, people are coming to value the way the mentally ill tend to think outside the box. Many of the brightest scientists, doctors, mathematicians, and artists are recognized as mentally ill. Ex. Albert Einstein.

As other people are beginning to recognize our value so are we beginning to open up. Many celebrities have “come out of the closet” of mental illness and serve as positive examples of all that the mentally ill have to offer society.

The Good News

"The only reason I've shared my story is to take that tiny baby step of breaking down the stigma attached to depression."
